Why does this blog exist?

Computing, AI, Science and… just about everything else is my attempt to raise the signal-to-noise ratio on the discourse on a number of related topics. Now more than ever, it is not possible to disentangle complex interconnections between well.. just about everything. I will attempt to do this in a generally accessible way. Not too technical, but also (hopefully) not devoid of insight.

While the topics I'll touch upon will be diverse, the elephant in the room (and the object of the first few posts) is AI. I find the public, scientific, tech, global, national discourse to be pretty awful. On one side, we’ve got the every-demo-is-a-revolution, every-curve-is-an-S-curve-or-exponential type of crowd (although this crowd is getting a bit more circumspect). On the other, we’ve got the “this is just glorified autocomplete*,” “it doesn’t really reason,” “wake me up when it’s AGI.” In between these camps**, lies  progress, limitations, and the messy, practical work of turning ideas into reliable tools for science, engineering, and industry.

One thing we'll frequently encounter is the fact that multiple, somewhat contradicting truths can co-exist. It is perfectly OK to question prevailing economic models while marveling at some of the things these models can do, while criticizing some crazy predictions on AI . This blog will probably live in the middle, hopefully in a less biased manner.

Finally, I'll declare that almost everything I say comes with a certain level of uncertainty... and on topics on which I am most uncertain about, I will try to project different scenarios.

* As much as this was a fair take circa early 2023, I wish these ideas don't persist in November 2025

** On that note, what happened to Gary Marcus? He has had very reasonable takes (and still does.. to an extent) but appears to be adding more noise than signal lately
